Which Type Of Sedation Is Right For You?
We offer three levels of sedation, and the right one depends on how anxious you feel, how long the appointment will take, and what you need to do afterwards. The one thing all three have in common is that you stay conscious and able to respond throughout — none of them is a general anaesthetic, and you are never fully unconscious.
Nitrous oxide
The lightest option, and the easiest to fit into an ordinary day. You breathe a mix of nitrous oxide and oxygen through a small mask over your nose. Within a few minutes you feel calm and slightly floaty — aware of what is happening, but far less bothered by it.
Its real advantage is how quickly it reverses. We turn it off, you breathe pure oxygen for a few minutes, and it is gone. Most people drive themselves home and return to work the same afternoon. It is also the option we most often use with children.
Oral conscious sedation
You take a prescribed tablet before your appointment, timed so it takes effect as you arrive. By the time treatment begins you are deeply relaxed and often drowsy — many patients doze, though you can still be roused and can respond to us throughout.
Most people remember very little afterwards, which for a genuinely anxious patient is often the whole point. The trade-off is duration: it does not switch off the way nitrous does. You will need someone to drive you home and stay with you, and you should plan nothing else that day.
IV sedation
The deepest level we offer. Sedation is delivered directly into a vein, which means it works almost immediately and — unlike a tablet — the dose can be adjusted during the appointment to keep you exactly as relaxed as you need to be.
Most patients remember almost nothing and describe it as feeling like far less time passed than actually did. That is what makes IV sedation the option for people who have avoided dentistry for years: several treatments that would otherwise take four or five separate appointments can often be completed in one. Your breathing, pulse, and oxygen levels are monitored continuously throughout.
As with oral sedation, you will need someone to drive you home and stay with you, and the rest of the day should be kept clear.
